Banning users
Banning users in Telegram is a somewhat complicated concept. First the user is deleted from the group and, as a result, is moved to a "removed users" list. To un-ban (kick)the user, an admin must delete them from the removed users list. Now the user can re-join the group or the admin can add them back to the group.
There are two ways to ban a user.
- Using the Telegram mobile app.
- An action dialog in the Api3 Administrator group.
Using the Telegram mobile app
This can only be done by and admin using the Telegram mobile app. The Telegram desktop app does not have the ability to ban users.
- Click on the group name (Api3) in the top tool bar to open the group settings.
- Click on the Edit button in the top tool bar.
- Click on the Members list item.
- Next use the Search button in the top tool bar to find the required user.
- Slide the user list item slowly to the left to expose action buttons that will operate on the user. WARNING, sliding to far to the left will delete (ban) the user without your actually selecting the Delete button.
- Select the Delete button. WARNING, there wil no confirmation dialog, the delete (ban) takes effect without a warning.
As a result of the steps above, the user is moved to the "Removed Users" list. This means the user cannot rejoin the group via a link and attempts to add the user back to the group by an admin will fail. This is how Telegram effectively bans a user.
Unbanning (kick) users
This can only be done by an admin using the Telegram mobile app. The Telegram desktop app does not have the ability to ban users.
- Click on the group name (Api3) in the top tool bar to open the group settings.
- Click on the Edit button in the top tool bar.
- Click on the Removed Users list item.
- Next use the Search button in the top tool bar to find the required user.
- Slide the user list item slowly to the left to expose action buttons that will operate on the user.
- Select the Delete button. WARNING, there wil no confirmation dialog, the delete action takes effect without a warning.
As a result of the steps above, the user is removed from the "Removed Users" list. This means the user's ban has been removed and they can rejoin the group via a link. This is how Telegram effectively un-bans (kicks) a user.
Direct invite
While the user can use an invite link to rejoin the group at this point, it is also possible to directly invite them.
- Click on the group name (Api3) in the top tool bar to open the group settings.
- Click on the Edit button in the top tool bar.
- Click on the Members list item.
- Click on the Add Members button.
- Use the search bar to find the user to invite.
- Find and select the user followed by the Done button in the top tool bar.
- An invite prompt will present itself to complete the invite.
It may be possible that when the user re-joins the group they will be in a timeout (restricted). See the Timeout users page to clear the timeout.
